Psalm 109

Vengeance Invoked upon Adversaries.

For the choir director. A Psalm of David.

1 O God of my praise,
Do not be silent!
For they have opened the wicked and deceitful mouth against me;
They have spoken against me with a lying tongue.
They have also surrounded me with words of hatred,
And fought against me without cause.
In return for my love they act as my accusers;
But I am in prayer.
Thus they have repaid me evil for good
And hatred for my love.

Appoint a wicked man over him,
And let an accuser stand at his right hand.
When he is judged, let him come forth guilty,
And let his prayer become sin.
Let his days be few;
Let another take his office.
Let his children be fatherless
And his wife a widow.
10 Let his children wander about and beg;
And let them seek sustenance far from their ruined homes.
11 Let the creditor seize all that he has,
And let strangers plunder the product of his labor.
12 Let there be none to extend lovingkindness to him,
Nor any to be gracious to his fatherless children.
13 Let his posterity be cut off;
In a following generation let their name be blotted out.

14 Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the Lord,
And do not let the sin of his mother be blotted out.
15 Let them be before the Lord continually,
That He may cut off their memory from the earth;
16 Because he did not remember to show lovingkindness,
But persecuted the afflicted and needy man,
And the despondent in heart, to put them to death.
17 He also loved cursing, so it came to him;
And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him.
18 But he clothed himself with cursing as with his garment,
And it entered into his body like water
And like oil into his bones.
19 Let it be to him as a garment with which he covers himself,
And for a belt with which he constantly girds himself.
20 Let this be the reward of my accusers from the Lord,
And of those who speak evil against my soul.

21 But You, O God, the Lord, deal kindly with me for Your name’s sake;
Because Your lovingkindness is good, deliver me;
22 For I am afflicted and needy,
And my heart is wounded within me.
23 I am passing like a shadow when it lengthens;
I am shaken off like the locust.
24 My knees are weak from fasting,
And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness.
25 I also have become a reproach to them;
When they see me, they wag their head.

26 Help me, O Lord my God;
Save me according to Your lovingkindness.
27 And let them know that this is Your hand;
You, Lord, have done it.
28 Let them curse, but You bless;
When they arise, they shall be ashamed,
But Your servant shall be glad.
29 Let my accusers be clothed with dishonor,
And let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

30 With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the Lord;
And in the midst of many I will praise Him.
31 For He stands at the right hand of the needy,
To save him from those who judge his soul. – NASB

2 Steps Closer to God

676331_66801405If I could give only two keys to getting really close to God I’d give these steps right here…

Enter His gates with thanksgiving
And His courts with praise.
Give thanks to Him, bless His name.

Psalm 100:4 NASB

Why do I choose this single scripture? Because of the great impact that thanksgiving and praise has on our relationship with God. Not only does it align our thinking but it also positions us for explosive favor! Let me explain…

Thankfulness

Psalm 100:4 says that we enter His gates by way of being thankful. So what does a gate have to do with this? Well first off a gate is obviously an entrance. We get that. We see that. That’s the easy part. As we look further in though we can see an interesting facet of what a gate represents. See in the time of the Bible a city gate was also a meeting place for the elders of the city. If you were invited to a meeting at the gates then you were a favored individual. The Word has all kinds a great things to say about someone who is thankful but obtaining favor with God is just another one of them.

Now just imagine yourself walking into the gates of the Lord’s house. You’re starting to sense His presence. Things just seem to be getting better ever since you went through that gate. There’s favor here…and it’s much harder to complain. His testimonies are healing you now even in the midst of trials! Yes, this is one of those special places where you find rest in the battle.

Praise

It’s really hard to be negative and thankful at the same time so thanksgiving opens us up and gets us in the door. Once we’re in the door and enjoying His presence though, now it’s time to start proclaiming who God is on Earth as He is in Heaven. When we do this we are reminding ourselves of His promises and loosing the Word into the Earth. All of this is generating a lifestyle of faith and ya know what? The Word says that it is impossible to please God without faith.

So you want to be close to God? Please Him with faith.

Now all of a sudden you start pleasing God and His favor is just multiplying over you! Praise is a way to draw near to God and it is a way through which He draws near to us. It’s funny how much the things of this Earth grow strangely dim when He is so big in our mind and speech. When we walk into His courts we then have access to His justice and in the closeness of worship He starts aligning our life.

So maybe you’re low on faith and feeling trampled. Start thanking and praising Him. Even if it’s for things He’s done for others; start thanking Him that He’ll do it for you too. Just decide to fill your mind and your mouth with thankfulness and praise and you will soon find the Lord lifting you up closer and closer to Him.

Don’t let better be the enemy of best. Keep climbing higher and more of the Lord will be discovered. Jesus loves ya!
